Susan Schmidt was the chair of an advisory committee in the 1970's that oversaw the creation of what would become the Ivy Creek Natural Area and the Ivy Creek Foundation. [1]She first became involved with the city-owned Rann Preserve (the predecessor foundation to both of the aforementioned organizations) in 1976, when she was a graduate student at UVA, and worked with the city and county governments on development plans for the area. At the first Ivy Creek Foundation Board of Directors meeting on May 3, 1979, Susan was named a member of the board. She retained this position up until 1981 and provided both continuity with past environmental preservation projects in the region and a strong emphasis on environmental education to the organization's activities.[2]
