Charlottesville Circuit Court, Judge Claude V. Worrell sentenced Nasier McGhee to ten years in prison for the March 4, 2023 voluntary manslaughter of Justice Kigen Kilel. None of the time imposed by the court was suspended.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Platania stated, “While Mr. McGhee was not the individual who ultimately possessed a firearm or fired the lethal shots, his participation in this violent attack warranted a conviction and a significant prison sentence that reflected the severity of the choices he made.”[1]

At 2:05 p.m., Charlottesville Police Department officers responded to a shooting at Sunshine Supermarket, located on 827 Cherry Ave.

Upon arrival, officers located 20-year-old Justice Kilel, a Gordonsville resident, inside of the business. Mr. Kilel was pronounced deceased at the scene. Shortly after arriving, CPD was notified that UVA Medical Center had received a patient who suffered a gunshot wound.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Kilel was inside the store purchasing an item when two individuals walked in and assaulted him. During the altercation, two of the individuals involved fired shots. The suspect, 17, who was admitted to UVA Medical Center, has been charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. Since the suspect is a juvenile, CPD will not be releasing their name.

The second suspect was located at an apartment complex in Albemarle County. He has been identified as 19-year-old Nasier McGhee. He has been charged with one count of malicious wounding. Investigators believe that this incident is part of an ongoing dispute between the suspects and victim. [2]
