- 1844 – James J. Thomas, future Confederate Veteran and Operator of the County Jail for many years, is born.
Deaths
- 2015 – Jason Lee “Jay” Shifflett is murdered in the early morning hours during a home invasion robbery at his residence in the 1500 block of Carlton Avenue. Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) detectives continue to seek information about the case. [1] [2]
- 2015 – Virginius Thornton dies at the age of 81. A lifelong civil rights advocate, Thornton was the first Black student to matriculate into the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia and helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a principal channel of student commitment to the civil rights movement during the 1960's.
