Queen Charlotte Hotel
The Queen Charlotte Hotel was an 80-room hotel located at 831-835 West Main Street just west of the Norfolk Southern Railroad from ca. 1910 until its demolition in 1955.
History
In the late 1800s, a 3-story frame house was enlarged with a rear wing and adapted for use as an inn, known as the Carter House. The 4-story Queen Charlotte Hotel was built onto the front circa 1910.[1]
E. L. Bailey purchased the hotel in 1934.
In November 1954, the city ordered the owner to retrofit the building to conform to the new building code effective January 1, 1953, including repairing exterior walls, building two remote fully enclosed interior stairwells for fire egress, and installing automatic fire sprinklers. The order required the owner to submit plans for the repairs by December 15, 1954 to avoid the city seeking a court-ordered demolition.[2]
The hotel was demolished in 1955. Bailey continued to own the empty lot until his death.
In 1965, Bailey's estate sold the lot to Bradley Peyton's Brasco Bay Corporation, owner of the Pontiac-Cadillac dealership across the street.[1]
Brasco Bay sold the site in 2002 to WM Management Ltd, which in turn sold it to Riverbend Development in 2006.
As of December 2025, the parcel is part of a proposed site for a student housing building developed by LV Collective.[3]
