Orland E. White

Orland Emile White was a geneticist at the University of Virginia. His work at UVA involved the study of eugenics.

Early Life

White was born in Sibley, Iowa in 1885. Growing up in the west, he developed an interest in nature at a young age.[1]

Career

Education and Early Work

White attended South Dakota State College and earned his degree in 1909. He then went to Harvard, earning his masters degree in 1912 and doctorate in 1913. White took courses on genetic psychology with Robert M. Yerkes. During his time at Harvard, White interacted with several eugenicists. After Harvard, White went on to work at the Brooklyn Botanic Gard as an assistant curator of plant breeding. Even though White established relationships with prominent eugenicists like Charles Benedict Davenpot early in his career, he was also involved with the birth control movement. White was a feminist throughout his career.[1]
