Old Lynchburg Road
Old Lynchburg Road is a roadway in Charlottesville and southern Albemarle County.
Course
The road's northern terminus is at its intersection with Jefferson Park Avenue Extended next to the Fry's Spring Beach Club. After becoming State Route 631 in Albemarle County[1], the road extends southward to Plank Road in the southern part of the county.
The site of the proposed town of Traveller's Grove was located at the junction of this road and the Taylor's Gap Roads.
Transportation projects
2014 improvements
- Main article: Old Lynchburg road improvements
The addition of sidewalks, bike lanes and drainage improvements on the city portion of Old Lynchburg Road from Jefferson Park Avenue to Middleton Lane was completed in 2014.
2026 improvements
On October 2, 2025, Albemarle County issued an invitation for bids to construct sidewalks along the west side of Old Lynchburg Road from the existing sidewalk next to Timberland Park, under the I-64 overpass, to the Rivanna Trail just south of Moores Creek, including a crosswalk at the northern terminus.[2][3] The county had previously requested for the city to contribute money to extend the project to Azalea Park.[4] As of September 2025, $1,147,000 had been appropriated for the project to date.[5]
Future projects
Old Lynchburg Road would also be affected by the County's proposed $12.8 million Fontaine/Sunset Connector project, designed to provide motorists with another access to the road. That project is on indefinite hold.
Speeding
After the 2014 project was completed, speed-tracking technology deployed by Paul Reynolds showed that speeding remains an issue on the street. [6]
