Events

  • 1895 – A gathering is held at Midway School to encourage financial support for the Piedmont Hospital, which serves the poor in the community. [1]
  • 1918 – World War I ends. At 5:00 on this day, the Allied powers and Germany signed an armistice document in the railway carriage of Ferdinand Foch, the commander of the Allied armies, and six hours later World War I came to an end. Charlottesville greeted the news with early morning whistles and an impromptu parade was held. [2]
  • 1931 – Business in Charlottesville halts at 1 p.m. to mark the 13th anniversary of the Armistice followed by a parade at 2 p.m. [3]
  • 1936 – Charlottesville marks the 18th anniversary of the Armistice. Businesses remain open except banks and the ABC store. There is no parade. [4]
  • 1955 – A commission of the Governor completed a study for a program to block the integration of Virginia's Public Schools. This would include calling the General Assembly for a special session to pass legislation calling for a constitutional amendment. The idea was to make it easier for private schools to be funded with local government money. The State Supreme Court ruled earlier in the week that that was unconstitutional. The commission was chaired by Senator Garland Gray. [5]
  • 1955 – The Cavalier Daily publishes an editorial calling for the University of Virginia to withdraw from the Atlantic Coast Conference and for athletics to be deemphasized. [6]
  • 1955 – A Southern Railway conductor was fined $10 for blocking the railway crossing at Shamrock Road. At the hearing, the trainmaster for Southern Railway said the company had offered to build a bridge across the railway but City Council had declined and asked for signal lights instead. Residents at the time had not wanted the bridge. [7]
  • 1957 – The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rules that a lower court judge erred by not imposing a timeline on Prince Edward County Schools to end racial segregation of public schools. [8]
  • 1961 – Both Charlottesville Police Chief J. E. Adams and Municipal Judge Allan N. Spitzer said they had received no formal complaints of police brutality following demonstrations at the University of Virginia. A letter to the editor published the day before claimed that "the Charlottesville police behaved like the typical sadistic small town police who are often objects of ridicule and laughter, but let me assure you that it is no joke." [9]
