WVIR, virtual channel 29, a local NBC television affiliate founded in Charlottesville on March 11, 1973. WVIR-TV's studios are located on East Market Street in downtown Charlottesville, and its transmitter is located on Carter Mountain, south of the city.

The station is owned by Atlanta-based Gray Television. [1]

On April 13, 2021, more than a dozen news organizations, which include NBC29′s parent company Gray Television, each filed requests for records related to the tip line Gov. Glenn Youngkin established shortly after taking office in January 2022. [2]The lawsuit filed by 13 media organizations in Richmond Circuit Court alleges that Youngkin is violating the FOI Act by withholding the release of the emails sent to the tip line he set up for parents to report “divisive practices” in their children’s schools. [3]

In March 2018, anchor Ken Jefferson passed away after a brief and unexpected illness. [4]
