Melvin Eugene Walker

Melvin "Mel" Eugene Walker was the proprietor and head chef of Mel's Cafe, a local restaurant situated on 719 West Main Street, that Walker ran for nearly 30 years.[1]

Biography

Walker was born in the Vinegar Hill neighborhood in 1952 and began working in the food service industry at age 11.[1] In 1984, after working in various dining venues, like The Virginian,[2] he opened Mel's Cafe on West Main Street. However, because of a lack of business, he closed the restaurant five years later. In 1995, Walker later repurchased the building and re-opened the restaurant, [3] establishing the business as a popular local eatery, a reputation that has remained strong in the almost 30 years since. On May 29, 2024, however, Melvin Eugene Walker, unfortunately passed away.[1]
