- 1934 – University of Virginia refuses to allow speech by Richard Moore because he was Black, and not because he was a communist. Moore had been invited so speak by members of the Free Discussion Group on the topic "The Right of Self Determination." [1]

- 1910 – Ellen Nash, one of the first women to practice law in Charlottesville and a member of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors from 1980 to 1984 [3]
