[1]The Judge Advocate General Legal Center and School (TJAGLCS) was established in 1951 [1] and it is operated by the U.S. Army. Located on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville, Virginia, adjacent to the University of Virginia School of Law in UVA's North Grounds, TJAGLCS is "the preeminent legal institution in the federal government."[1]

TJAGLCS provides JAGs, commanders, and legal personnel continuous legal education. "As a part of the greater legal academic community, we further the development and implementation of the law through a collegial academic environment, scholarship, and assistance to legal professionals."[1]

Established in 1942 during World War II, the school was first located in Washington D.C. before it was relocated to the University of Virginia grounds in 1951.[2] Over the decades, TJAGLCS has grown and evolved, adjusting its curriculum to accommodate the ever-changing legal and operational environments of the U.S. military.

Mission

The primary mission of TJAGLCS is to provide advanced and specialized training to Army legal professionals.[1] This includes instruction in various legal disciplines, military law, and operational law. The institution supports not only the Army but also serves the broader Department of Defense community. Additionally, the school occasionally provides training for international military students from allied nations

  • Paralegal Course: Designed for non-commissioned officers serving as paralegals.
  • Other specialty short courses tailored to the needs of the military legal community.

The TJAGLCS campus is equipped with modern classrooms, a moot court facility, and a legal research center. The institution also boasts a comprehensive military law library.
