History
Holloday had served in the Confederate Army as a member of John Mosby's Rangers, as the 43rd Battalion of the Virginia Cavalry was known. After the war he attended Hampden-Sydney College and became a successful farmer near Culpeper before moving to Charlottesville. Historian James H. Buck Jr. writes that Holloday chose Belmont because of its "natural beauty and charm." He built a house at what is now 901 Belmont Avenue.
The home eventually became an apartment complex but has since been renovated.
Holloday at one point owned a business called The Home Laundry but his son Zachary Jr. took it over. [1]
