John Hartwell Cocke (1780-1866)[1] was a prominent American Military officer, planter, and businessman. Cocke served in the War of 1812 and is well-known for helping Thomas Jefferson establish the University of Virginia.[1] In addition, Cocke was one of six men to serve on the original Board of Visitors in 1817.[2]
