J. B. S. Alexander

James Butler Sigourney Alexander was born in Charlottesville on January 6, 1836. He graduated at the U.S. (West Point) Military Academy, in June, 1856, and was a second-lieutenant in the U. S. Army until April, 1861, when he resigned. On May 8, 1861 he was appointed Captain in the Army of Northern Virginia. Later he became Assistant C. M. and Q. M. General in the Army of Northern Virginia, under General Garnett and General Jackson. Capt. Alexander died at Allegheny Springs, August 13th, 1861, of typhoid fever. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery at Charlottesville.

Served in the Pacific Northwest; resigned as the War between the States was breaking out, and died three months later, five years after graduating.
