Homestay ordinances seek to regulate the practice of short-term room-sharing and home-sharing.

Albemarle

Albemarle County requires a permit and rules differ depending on whether the property is in the development area or rural area.

New rules were adopted in 2019. Some expressed concerned they are too restrictive. They formed a group called Residents Endorsing Albemarle County Homestays. [1]

Charlottesville

Property owners who rent out their homes must have a business license and obtain a Homestay Provisional Use Permit.

Charlottesville's Commissioner of Revenue, Todd Divers, has argued against participating in a collection agreement with AirBnB. [2]

The Charlottesville Housing Advisory Committee discussed the matter in November 2019 and agreed to try to collect more data on the extent of the practice. [3]
