George Welsh, College Football Hall of Fame coach, served as the head of the UVa team from 1982 to 2000.
Welsh had a 134-86-3 record at UVa and retired with more wins than any other Atlantic Coast Conference coach. He led the Cavaliers to their first bowl appearance in 1984, shared ACC titles in 1989 and 1995 and made 11 additional bowl appearances. When Welsh took over the program, the Cavaliers had had only two winning seasons in the previous 29 years.
Welsh died on January 2, 2019 at age 85.[1]
