Ellen Nash
Ellen V. "Enie" Nash (May 20, 1910 - June 28, 1995) was a member of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors who represented the Scottsville Magisterial District from 1980 to 1984.
Biography
Ellen Virginia Nash was born on May 20, 1910 in Omaha, Nebraska. In Omaha, she was a student at the Academy of the Sacred Heart and Duchesne College. She lived with her aunt in Paris, France, for several years, where she attended the Sorbonne for a short period of time.[1] In the 1930s, she joined the Civil Works Administration, where she worked for years before becoming Assistant to the General Counsel of the Federal Workers Agency.
During World War II, Nash joined the Women's Army Corps. She earned her pilot's license in 1945 at Milton Airport in Shadwell.
Nash graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1952; she was the only woman in her class.[1]
Her political career began as a member of the Albemarle County Electoral Board, which she served on from 1973-1979. Nash was one of the first women to practice law in the area, the majority of which she did on her own, particularly in real estate and contract work. She only retired in 1990.[2]
She died on June 28, 1995 at her home in Kenwood, at the age of 85. [1]
During her time practicing law, Nash was painted by local artist Frances Brand as part of her "Firsts" series.
Activities
Nash and fellow Supervisors Gerald Fisher and Patricia H. Cooke took a trip in the mid-1980's to Poggio a Caiano, Italy, to set up a student exchange program.[3]
