Duane Snow (December 15, 1944 - September 3, 2022) was the operator of a family owned and operated garden store in Albemarle County as well as a one term Supervisor on the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors representing the Samuel Miller Magisterial District. [2]
Biography
Duane Snow was born in Charlottesville. Snow’s grandfather founded a "market garden" in 1912 which eventually grew to become Snow's Garden Center located in Albemarle County on Avon Street, Extended.
In 1970, Duane Snow returned to Charlottesville to work for the family business after graduating from Brigham Young University in Utah. He retired from the company in 2005. In April 2009, he and his wife Rena completed an 18-month missionary trip to the Philippines. Snow decided to run for public office shortly after his return.
Before seeking office, prior public service in the community included a term on the Architectural Review Board, membership on the board of the local chapter of the American Heart Association, as well as ten years on the Virginia State Agricultural Council. He also co-hosted "Snow Knows," a radio show about local gardening and landscaping that continues to air Saturday mornings on WINA. Now hosted by Corbin Snow and Norm Carlson, it is the station's most listened to weekend program.[3] On the air since the spring of 1950, it is possibly the longest running gardening show produced for radio in the United States.
Snow died after a five and a half year battle with prostrate cancer. [2]
