History

The Downtown Crozet Initiative was started in 2015 to help with two public meetings in May and June, 2015 aimed at gathering input for the future of the site formerly home to the J. Bruce Barnes Lumber Company.[1]

The group now meets every month and focuses on offering guidance for the future of Downtown Crozet and a plaza space being proposed by developer Frank Stoner of Milestone Partners and Crozet New Town Associates. The group has expressed interest in fundraising for a plaza space, working to brand and market Downtown Crozet and finding local and state resources to help with infrastructure improvements in the downtown area.[2]

The group is seeking to become a nonprofit entity in order to seek grants and raise money to further economic development in Crozet. [3]

Plaza Space

The DCI has been involved in the design and planning of a civic plaza space designated for Phase I of the proposed redevelopment of the Barnes Lumber property. The plaza is expected to be at least 12,000 square feet.[4]

The DCI held interviews with landscape architecture firms in June 2016[5] and announced their selection of Mahan Rykiel in July 2016.[6]

The developer has expressed interest in finding a nonprofit organization to own and manage The Square and plaza space in Downtown Crozet. Stoner said a nonprofit could have access to grants to help fund construction of the plaza and has suggested the Crozet Board of Trade could be a potential partner.[7]

The possibility of using bonds to finance the plaza has been mentioned. [8]
