The Delevan Hotel was originally built to house University of Virginia students. [1] Throughout its lifetime, it served as a classical academy, a military hospital, a Freedmen's Bureau school, and the site of the city's first biracial political meeting in 1867.[1] The building, colloquially known as the "Mudwall" building because of the red clay used to build it, was bought by the First Baptist Church (West Main Street) congregation on August 20, 1868 and was renamed the Delevan Baptist Church.
