Crow Indoor Pool
The Crow Indoor Pool is an aquatic center operated by the Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department that is co-located at Walker Upper Elementary School. The pool remains open in 2022 despite an earlier decision by Council in the late 2000's to close it.
The pool is named after Nan Crow, a director of the city recreation department. [citation needed]
Decision to close
Charlottesville City Council held a work session to discuss the future of pools with the Piedmont Family YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club of Central Virginia. Mike Svetz, the parks director at the time, said a 2005 needs assessment said major repairs were needed. [1]
Closure and reopening
The pool was closed in October 2010 when the new Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center opened. [2]
Despite being closed to the public, Crow was initially reopened to be rented by groups at a rate of $16.50 per lane hour.[2]
Crow's closure had been contingent on the eventual reopening of the Piedmont Family YMCA in McIntire Park.
