Charlottesville's Office of the Sheriff handles civil process of legal papers, inmate transportation, mental patient transportation for the Charlottesville Police Department through a cooperative agreement, and provides security for Charlottesville's Circuit and General District Courts.
The sheriff's office does not perform criminal law enforcement, which is instead handled by the Charlottesville Police Department.
The current sheriff is James E. Brown, who was elected on November 3, 2009 and sworn in on December 23, 2009.
