In 1991, Dr. Mohan Nadkarni and Dr. Paul DeMarco were two residents at the University of Virginia Medical Center who felt there was a tremendous need for medical service for the uninsured. In September 1991, they incorporated a non-profit organization to raise money for a clinic. The first clinic opened in September 1992 in donated space in the former MacGregor Motors building. In 1995, the clinic negotiated with the Thomas Jefferson Health District to share space in their facility on Rose Hill Drive.
