The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerceis a business advocacy organization founded in 1913.


History

The chamber has played a role in economic development in the region for decades.

  • November 20, 1914 – Representatives from area fruit companies gather to discuss the construction of a cold storage plant [1]
  • In 1929, the chamber was assisting efforts to attract a rayon plant to the community. [2]

Visits to other places

The Chamber occasionally organizes and pays for trips to other communities. In October 2012, nineteen individuals traveled to Burlington, Vermont for a "journey of learning." They included Cheri Lewis of the Planning Commission, Mike Gaffney and Maurice Cox. Cox said a City Council meeting early in 2003 that Charlottesville could learn a lot from Burlington, and Richards said the community has a lot more power under Vermont law to mandate creation of affordable housing. However, Councilor Rob Schilling pointed out the Vermont city had a tax rate twice that of Charlottesville. [7]

Chamber Retail Sales

Albemarle County were $15.1 million; a year-to-year gain of +$988,000.
City of Charlottesville were $11.789 million; a year-to-year gain of +$545,000.
Virginia Department of Taxation retail sales tax data compiled showed that retail sales over the course of 2016 (January – December) compared to the full 2015 year, were up in Albemarle County +6.75%; up in Charlottesville +4.85%; up in Augusta County +5.87%; up in Fluvanna County, +13.96%; up in Greene County, +11.21%; up in Louisa County, +12.75%.[9]

Chamber Jobs Reports

The 2018 Chamber Jobs Report marked the fifteenth year in which the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce has reported comprehensively on the jobs landscape of the Greater Charlottesville communities the Chamber serves.
Data showed that over the full year prior (2015), “Trade, Transportation & Utilities” held the largest segment of jobs, 17,183 or 19.9%; of all private sector jobs, within the Greater Charlottesville region, are in “Trade, Transportation & Utilities;” most of those jobs in retail. Notably, Wegmans, a leading supermarket company, that opened in late Fall 2016, with 550 people hired for jobs at its new Albemarle location, was not included in that report.

State of the Community

In February 2022, the Chamber held the first ever State of the Community event at which leaders from the University of Virginia, Albemarle County, and Charlottesville spoke.
