Articles related to roadways for motorized traffic in Charlottesville-Albemarle. Within Charlottesville, four functional classification systems exist: principal arterials, minor arterials, collectors, and local streets. The principal arterial street system serves the major activity centers and carries the highest traffic volumes. This system carries most of the trips entering and leaving the city and those trips traveling through the city. Bus service currently operates on nearly the entire principal arterial network. This classification includes a controlled-access facility (US 250 Bypass) but is not limited to controlled-access routes. For principal arterials, service to abutting land should be subordinate to travel service.[1]
