Controversy

Ellis faced criticism in early 2023 after his appointment to the Board of Visitors, when several text messages were exposed, wherein, Ellis criticized UVA's culture of diversity and the university's focus on slavery as a part of the institution's history.[2] Recently, Ellis has walked back these statements and apologized to UVA staff.[3]
