Albemarle Academy was incorporated in 1803; at that time, the Academy existed only on paper, but it would end up playing the role of "midwife" for the founding of the University of Virginia.
Before it could be opened as an academy, however, it evolved into Central College in 1815; and this in turn became in 1819 the University of Virginia (first opened to students in 1825).
