- January 7 – The political year began with a special election in Senate District 10 to replace the vacancy left when John McGuire was elected to represent Virginia's 5th Congressional District. Republican Luther Cifers defeated Democrat Jack Trammell. [1] [2]
- January 14 – Charlottesville Circuit Court Judge Claude Worrell rules that plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Charlottesville City Council had standing in court to challenge a special use permit for additional density at 2005 Jefferson Park Avenue, but also rules that Council had right to grant the permit [3]
- January 22 – Albemarle Board of Supervisors names Andrew Herrick to serve as Albemarle County Attorney [4]
- January 23 – Albemarle County School Board appoints Leslie Pryor to fill the vacancy left in the Rio District with the death of Charles Pace [5]
- February 26 – Charlottesville Board of Architectural Review approves a Certificate of Appropriateness for demolition of 200 West Main Street (Violet Crown) [6]
- March 18 – John Casteen III, seventh president of the University of Virginia [7]
- April 7 – Charlottesville City Council adopts master plan for Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department [8]
- June 27 – Jim Ryan resigns as president of the University of Virginia under pressure from the U.S. Department of Justice [9]
- August 12 – Lauren Eddy suddenly resigns as General Registrar and Director of Elections in Albemarle County [10] [11]
- September 2 – Charlottesville City Council upholds Board of Architectural Review's denial of a demolition request at 1301 Wertland Street [12]
- September 12 – University of Virginia Board of Visitors agree to lease Oak Lawn property to City of Charlottesville as a consolation prize for the Federal Executive Institute [13]
- October 6 – Charlottesville City Council authorizes City Manager Sam Sanders move forward with acquiring 2000 Holiday Drive for the purposes of creating a low-barrier housing shelter [14]
- October 15 – Albemarle County Board of Supervisors adopt an updated Comprehensive Plan [15]
- October 28 – Albemarle County Planning Commission holds public hearing for rezoning for expansion of Attain on 5th apartment complex [16]
- November 3 – The University of Virginia issues an emergency alert over an attacker on Grounds only to give the all clear an hour and a half later [17] [18]
