Events
- February 4 – Charlottesville became the first city in the country to pass a drone resolution. In a 3-2 vote, members of the Charlottesville City Council (2012-2013) passed a resolution placing a two-year moratorium on the use of drones within city limits. [1]
- February 12 – The Charlottesville Planning Commission voted 6-0 to recommend denial of a rezoning for the Belmont Point subdivision. [2]
- April 2 – Jason Vandever is elected as Charlottesville's Treasurer in a special election [3]
- May 20 – Charlottesville City Council approves human rights ordinance[4]that prohibits discrimination within the City. The ordinance established the Charlottesville Office of Human Rights, along with an appointed commission.
- May 21 – City Council voted 3-2 to approve the rezoning and critical slopes waiver for Belmont Point [5] The Councilors who voted for the project were Dave Norris, Satyendra Huja and Kristin Szakos. The no votes were from Kathy Galvin and Dede Smith. [6]
- June 3 – Charlottesville City Council approves updated transition plan for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. [7]
- June 5 – Christopher Dumler resigns from the Albemarle Board of Supervisors after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor sexual battery charge [8]
- July 27 – Loretta Lynn brought her show to the nTelos Pavilion in Charlottesville. Albemarle County resident Sissy Spacek, who played Loretta in the 1980 film, Coal Miner’s Daugher, was on hand as her daughter, Schuyler Fisk, was the opening act. [9]
- July 30 – Albemarle County Planning Commission recommends approval of rezoning for Riverside Village on Route 20 in the Pantops area [10] [11]
- August 19 – Charlottesville City Council adopts Comprehensive Plan update [12]
- September 13 – A group of area arts leaders endorse the Create Charlottesville plan put together by the Piedmont Council for the Arts. [13]
Deaths
- September 10 – Randy Lee McKinstry, 18, dies when his motorcycle slams into a GMC Yukon on East Rio Road that was turning left into Pen Park. Police say speed was a contributing factor, and this is the sixth traffic fatality in Albemarle this year.[14]
- September 17 – Historical impersonator, and Thomas Jefferson's Fifth Great-Grandson, Roberts "Rob" Coles Jr., passes away.[15]
- December 8 – Richard "Dick" Hamilton Barrick - former Charlottesville Commonwealth's Attorney (aged 83) [16]
