- City councilors voted to include themselves in the city’s employee medical and dental insurance coverage plans. Employees and councilors who already had medical insurance from another source were allowed to opt out of coverage and receive a $500 annual stipend paid over the course of the year. [1]
- January 3 – Satyendra Huja elected Mayor of Charlottesville [2]
- January 3 – The Chamber of Commerce officially organized what would later be renamed the Minority Business Alliance [3] [4]
- January 6 – Albemarle County's portion of the John Warner Parkway is dedicated. The city's portion would remain incomplete for three more years. [5]
- February 6 – Charlottesville City Council hears report from Human Rights Task Force [6]
- April 25 – Court hearing for lawsuit filed by Coalition to Preserve McIntire Park against the Federal Highway Administration regarding the Meadowcreek Parkway [7]
- June 27 – Virginia Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton addresses the North Charlottesville Business Council about progress being made to build the Western Bypass. [8]
- July 1 – VA Senate Bill 604 goes into effect granting added additional privileges to the brewery license by allowing the retail sales of beer on brewery premises and in public tasting rooms. Brewers formerly were required to obtain a second license to sell beer for off-premises consumption and to obtain a restaurant license in order to sell beer for on-premises consumption. Under the new law, brewers were able to operate more like a Virginia farm winery. August would later become Virginia Craft Beer Month.

- September 15 – Sara Bon-Harper becomes director Highland [10]
