- January 2 – Charlottesville City Council (1960-1962) unanimously adopted a new section of the city Building Code entitled: “Family Fallout Shelters”, which was offered at the meeting of the council on December 18, 1961. [1]
- September 13 – Charlottesville School Board votes to recommend that City Council reinstate a compulsory school attendance law that had been suspended when schools were ordered to be desegregated. Many in Charlottesville continued to resist. [2]
Deaths
- July 4 – Bland Harris dies in Petersburg, Virginia. A resident of Nelson County, Harris served in World War II and had his portrait photograph included within the Holsinger Studio Collection.
