- January 1 – The Albemarle Board of Supervisors created a new attorney position that would handle all civil matters, removing those duties from the Commonwealth's Attorney. John S. Graves became the first county attorney. [1]
- January 3 – The second term of the University of Virginia's 110th session begins with 2,341 students enrolled, 105 students suspended, and 71 on probation. [2]
- January 3 – Albemarle County checks totaling $53,596.95 were signed by both County Treasurer G. Stuart Hamm and County Executive Henry A. Haden. Hamm maintained the elimination of his position was unconstitutional and the National Bank and Trust Company refused to take checks not signed by both. [3]
- January 3 – The Public Works Administration announces $379,000 for three new buildings at the University of Virginia [4]
- January 3 – T.W. Stephens is named Business Census Administrator [5]
- January 8 – Engineers employed by the Bureau of Public Roads arrive at Monticello to begin the work of making roads and landscaping [6]
- January 9 – Albemarle County Attorney John S. Graves files a writ of mandamus to the Virginia Supreme Court seeking the ouster of Treasurer Stuart Hamm. Hamm's response was filed by attorney Lyttleton Waddell. [7]
- January 9 – According to a Daily Progress front page article, Elsie Barksdale Ray is shot and killed by a Mrs. William Casey over an alleged affair. [8]
- March 22 – At 12:01 midnight seventeen years of bone dry prohibition came to an end, and a new system of control was ushered in, calling for State monopolistic sale of hard liquor through dispensaries and a licensing system for high test beers and wines.[9]
- March 30 – According to the Daily Progress, Mrs. William P. Casey, of Stony Point, was cleared on the charge of having murdered Elsie B. Ray by a jury in Judge A. D. Dabney’s corporation court at Charlottesville. The jury was out only 30 minutes.[10][11]
- December 31 – The Alcoholic Beverage Control store in Charlottesville stayed open until 11 p.m. as people who wanted to drink alcohol to welcome in the new year could do so legally for the first time in 18 years. [12]
