- September 6 – At 1 o’clock on this Tuesday afternoon, the funeral of Fannie McCue took place from the Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville. According to the Daily Progress, "the sacred edifice was filled with a throng which packed the building to its doors.” The next day, her husband Sam was arrested for her murder.
- September 7 – At at 5:20 p.m., attorney and former mayor of Charlottesville, J. Samuel McCue was arrested on a warrant charging him with the murder of his wife.
- October 18 – The Trial of J. Samuel McCue began at the Albemarle County Courthouse.
- November 5 – J. Samuel McCue, for four years Mayor of Charlottesville, was found guilty to-day of the murder of his wife, Fannie McCue on Sunday night, Sept. 4 last. The verdict was murder in the first degree, which carries with it the death penalty. The jury deliberated less than half an hour.[1]
- November 22 – Civil suits amounting to more than $15,000 are filed against J. Samuel McCue; plaintiffs included Jefferson National Bank who sought $8,000 ($164,000 in 2004 dollars). [2]
Deaths
- July 26 – William Fitzhugh Gordon Jr., died in Staunton, Va. He served as clerk of the Virginia House of Delegates (1859-1865). During the 1860's, he live at Enderly with his wife Nammie.
- September 4 – Fannie Crawford McCue, wife of former mayor J. Samuel McCue, murdered in their home at 601 Park Street.[3]
