The national Panic of 1893 led to a full-scale recession, causing a cash squeeze and large quantities of unsold merchandise by 1895.
- April 26 – Inclement weather canceled the meeting of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors. [1]

Deaths
- January 29 – William Linn Tidball dies in New York City and is later buried in the Bronx's Woodlawn Cemetery. A writer and veteran of the Mexican-American War, Tidball served as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War and later was stationed in Charlottesville as the first "Military Commissioner of Albemarle County," overseeing the military government of the area during Reconstruction.
- November 27 - R. F. Harris died at the age of 66. At a Special Meeting of the Council held the following evening, the council adopted a Resolution that the City Hall be draped in mourning for 30 days in respect for the memory of the late Mayor R. F. Harris.
