- March 13 - the General Assembly passed an act directing the adjutant general to compile a roster of all those who served from Virginia in the Confederate armed forces. The project did not begin, however, until Congress' passage of an act in 1903 providing for the assembling of muster rolls for all the Confederate states and Virginia's subsequent creation of the Office of the Secretary of Virginia Military Records in 1904.

- February 18 – Cora Ross is born to John and Alice Cora Douglass Thompson in Virginia. A local house cleaner, Ross had her portrait photograph prominently included within the Holsinger Studio Collection.
