Deaths
- November 12 – Shots Fired: On the anniversary of the 1836 University of Virginia disturbance, professor John A. G. Davis was shot by a rioting student, later named as Joseph Semmes.[2] While a newspaper account at the time reported the wound was not mortal, Davis died two days later on November 14, 1840 at the age of 38. [3] Considered by some as the first U.S. campus shooting.[4]
