Wood Field was the region's first airport, opened in 1929 by the Dixie Flying Service off of Garth Road. The airport was named after “Buck” Wood, a World War I pilot from the area who was killed in 1918. After remaining open four years, the airport became a victim of the depression in 1933, leaving Charlottesville and Albemarle County without an airport until the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport opened in 1954[1].
