The Schenks Branch Interceptor is a wastewater transmission line that is being replaced by the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority in multiple phases. The 21-inch pipe, originally built in the 1950's, serves an area in Charlottesville that spans from McIntire Road and Preston Avenue to Melbourne Road. [1] [2] pipeline 21 inches in diameter owned by the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority that carries wastewater through the Schhenks Branch Basin. The RWSA is in the midst of replacing the pipe with a 30 inch ductile iron pipe. [3].

As part of a consent decree, The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality had ordered the RWSA and the City of Charlottesville to submit a plan for how it will be upgraded.

Construction

Replacement logistics were coordinated to take advantage of the construction of the John Warner Parkway. The project was split into two phases. The first is along the city's Schenks Branch Greenway along McIntire Road and the second is along the county-owned property on which the county office building is located.

The first phase was authorized for contractor Digs Inc. to proceed on July 6, 2015. However, crews encountered rock which has pushed back the completion date several times. As of November 2016, the project is expected to be completed in spring of 2016, half a year later than expected. A portion of the greenway has been reopened, but not all of it.

The second phase will travel between the recycling facility south towards the Albemarle County Office Building. That project cannot begin until the city and county can agree on how to proceed. Either the county will grant an easement on their property, or the city will allow the pipe to be installed under McIntire Road. There has been no resolution of this as of August 4, 2016. [4] [1]
