Rio Hill is a small hill in Albemarle County, located north of the intersection of Rio Road and U.S. Route 29. It is the site of the present day Rio Hill Shopping Center.
On February 29, 1864, Rio Hill was the site Albemarle County's only civil war battle, the Battle of Rio Hill. Home to a Confederate winter camp, comprising of four batteries of the Stuart Horse Artillery commanded by Captain Marcellus N. Moorman, it was attacked by Union General George A. Custer and about 60 of his men as part of a a diversionary raid. Despite the destruction to the camp, 200 Confederates rallied in a counterattack which forced Custer’s withdrawal. Few casualties were reported.
