First United Methodist Church
First United Methodist Church is located at the corner of E. Jefferson and First Street in Charlottesville.
Origins
First United Methodist Church was first established in 1834 on the south side of Water Street between First and West Second Streets.[1] In 1859, the congregation moved to larger quarters on South Street, with this structure being completely renovated in 1888. In 1897, the church would provide both inspiration and members for the Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church (then known as the Belmont Avenue United Methodist Church).
Current Building history
Ground was broken for the congregation's third church on March 12, 1923. [2] The Daily Progress reported in early January 1925 that the building was scheduled for occupancy in May of that year. At the time, Henry C. Pfeiffer was set to become the new pastor. [3] The first service in this new facility was held on November 12, 1925. [1] During this time, it also housed the Wesley Foundation and had a Sunday membership of around 1,000 individuals.
In 1957, the church served as the base of operations for the establishment of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. In 1978, it underwent extensive renovation, including a complete refurbishment of the air conditioning within the sanctuary and fellowship hall. In 1986 a new chapel was erected, and in 1989 a new pipe organ was installed.
