Completed in 1850, the Virginia Central Railroad connected Charlottesville and Richmond by rail for the first time. The construction was completed by over 400 slaves. The first trips on the railroad were undertaken by small trains with top speeds of 12-15 miles, making the journey to Richmond last five hours[1].
