Issue with Visual editor

As of yesterday, Visual Editor feature is not working for me...getting the following: "Error loading data from server: apierror-visualeditor-docserver-http: HTTP 502. Would you like to retry?" Any suggestions?14:05, 13 May 2023 (EDT)

That's above my knowledge base but I'm going to ask a question in the Slack chat now. If you'd like to join that, I can send you an invite. --Seantubbs (talk) 22:29, 13 May 2023 (EDT)
Yes - please send me an invite to Slack chat. Is Visual editor feature working for you? Jmh6d (talk) 13:37, 14 May 2023 (EDT)
No - still broken as of this post and I'll contact Michael H. in a bit to see if he can help and to get you that invite. Try this link which will expire in a few days --Seantubbs (talk) 06:41, 15 May 2023 (EDT)
Quick update - Michael H. is working on it. At the moment, he's our only tech person. In the very near future that might be changing but hopefully he'll be able to sort something out. Apologies for the inconvenience, but perhaps this experience will lead to some needed improvements! --Seantubbs (talk) 09:03, 17 May 2023 (EDT)

Issue with CAPTCHA

...save issues - I find this CAPTCHA glitchy...at times shows over 10x or requires log out/in to save. (I use Firefox, so maybe that is the issue with this particular CAOTCHA). Jmh6d (talk) 08:44, 26 February 2019 (EST)

(Part A)...I'm not much of a tech person. I'm not sure what you mean about the issue with CAPTCHA but I'll loop in some of the more tech-focused people. Thanks for all you're doing!
--Seantubbs (talk) 11:26, 26 February 2019 (EST)
Hey all and yes thanks for all your edits! I've turned off the ReCaptcha when creating a new article (I think that's what is being triggered?) in case that helps, but Rory might have better ideas for how to automate a bot to do this for us.
--Meekohi (talk) 11:42, 26 February 2019 (EST)

Now that you mention it - creating a new article did appear to be part of the "trigger" issue when combined with the amount of TIME spend working on the article on screen. My workaround to avoid solving the picture test multiple times without success, was to cut the entire article>logging out>logging in>paste the article and then save. Found informative article on the subject of CAPTCHA - if nothing else, the last paragraph is worth reading for a grin. Why CAPTCHAs have gotten so difficult Demonstrating you’re not a robot is getting harder and harder.

Dates / chronology function

Glad to see dates being used. I added Help:Dates article and new Template:Event Date...this new template appears to work with your February 23 article. Please let me know otherwise. (found a similar template - Template:Date - last updated in 2012. I was not sure what it did, other than showing today's date, so left as-is.) Rather then manually adding days, is it possible to code a bot which can create and format the remaining 300+ days?

(Part B) Thanks for picking up the ball on the dates - I'm interested in getting the chronology function to work...
--Seantubbs (talk) 11:26, 26 February 2019 (EST)

I am still sorting out how to make Category:Chronology work with Dates (Days and Years) and the wikilink feature. From what I gather, Cvillepedia was originally setup with "Day" and "Year" DATES assigned to Categories rather then Pages. Since the wikilink feature only links to pages, and not to categories or subcategories, PAGES need to be created for the separate "Dates" and "Years"...if my assumption is correct, maybe a bot can create the pages for each year and the 300+ date pages.? --Jmh6d (talk) 22:55, 26 February 2019 (EST)

Categories

Is there a way to display a list of ALL of the active categories and subcategories to choose from? Jmh6d (talk) 01:03, 9 February 2019 (EST)

Yes - check here for a special page on categories, which should list all of them. There are other "special pages" too but let's start with that one? --Seantubbs (talk) 09:52, 9 February 2019 (EST)

Seminar?

Looks like you're getting lots of new contributors, which is great. One thing that they added a ton of, if you can remind them, is the {{DEFAULTSORT:LAST,FIRST}} without subbing the actual names. We have jillions of those, now. Something you should consider adding to the training. B.S. Lawrence 13:56, 17 June 2009 (EDT)

This was my first training session on this, so it's a learning curve for me, definitely. I'm going through and patrolling and fixing all the mistakes and using the time to polish up the empty entries a little. Really appreciate the organizational work you're doing and trying my best to learn from you! --Seantubbs 13:58, 17 June 2009 (EDT)

References

Hey Seantubbs, one thing that I've noticed (maybe it's only on the older pages?) is that you've added some references that go to a home page rather than to the actual reference. See the changes I just made on the Dominion Development Resources page: referencing /projects rather than the DDR home page. Another (less clear due to volume of changes) example was on Terry W. Hawkins re:the loper archive references. When possible, it'll make reference checking much easier if you include the link containing the reference content. Thanks! -- B.S. Delete Sandbox Pages

Let me get back to you - I don't necessarily know the answer but that's a good question. Are you interested in getting more involved with the administration of the site? --Seantubbs (talk) 20:39, 16 June 2020 (EDT)

Yes, I would be interested in the opportunities of administrative duties (with the understanding I can't break Cvillepedia ;-) Jmh6d (talk) 17:34, 25 June 2020 (EDT)

I am ready for administrative duties - unless you have something pressing that you would like for me to do, I am interested in getting started on organizing the categories and subcategories.Jmh6d (talk) 18:14, 18 July 2020 (EDT)
Apologies for delay! Check your email. --Seantubbs (talk) 11:29, 19 July 2020 (EDT)

Cville lawsuit page

Hi Sean. Making some corrections and updates to the Robert E Lee statue page, I realized there needs to be a separate page explaning the statute lawsuit itself.

It went on for three years, involved significant legal principles regarding citizens calling local authorities to account. Judge Moore called it the most complex and hard fought case he'd ever seen or heard of. And it featured the highly unusual twist of the City going to the Virginia legislature to change the law after they lost. The Virginia Supreme Court decision expected in the next few months will certainly interest more than just the parties -- though obviously we cannot say in advance whether it might create a new landmark in the law.

U Va Law School's list of filings is helpful, but just a list with links: to nonlawyers not very informative. Reading the filings leaves the lay reader flummoxed with impenetrable legalese. The case should be explained step by step.

I might try compiling a page, but as you know I have an interest in the matter. In general disinterested editors are better.

Then again I know what happened from the inside, I can explain it far better than a non-lawyer. And as to objectivity, the corrective against bias would be: (1) footnotes to outside sources like news articles, and (2) other editors who certainly will bring their own perspective.

I will outline the page and start compiling citations if you think it worth trying. If you think an editor with no connection to the case would be better, let me know now, to spare me time and trouble. --Polonius

Just change what you think you need to change, and others will come in. There are two others who have been working on that page, and you are perhaps right there needs to be a separate page for the lawsuit. I'm surprised there isn't one already? --Seantubbs (talk) 10:21, 22 December 2020 (EST)
Thanks Sean. It'll take some time to compile the cites, which do before I draft text when wiki-editing. In creating the page I will disclose on the talk page that the initial editor has a connection to the case, but will not use my name. "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." – Oscar Wilde

Wiki markup language page?

Sean is there a page with handy references to the Cvillepdia footnote markup language? The footnote cite forms differ from what I am used to on Wikipedia. For instance there is a Wikipedia "cite book" form which does not work here.Polonius

Perfect. Thanks. And Happy New Year. Polonius

Deleting photo

Sean--I'd like to delete the photo I uploaded [[File:LeeFeb2021.jpeg]] and substitute another without the smoky blur over Traveler's head, like Lee has been toking up. I don't have admin. privileges which I think are required to delete or substitute another photo. Can you do so? User:Polonius

I can delete the photo, but that wipes out the whole thing. Can you try uploading it again? Being able to replace photos should be something users should be able to do. --Seantubbs (talk) 12:09, 16 February 2021 (EST)
Thanks for the reply. Should be, but isn't. I could (and will) create a whole new page, using a different photo name, you can just delete that old page. User:Polonius

What do you think about adding "On this day..." to the Main Page? See: Sandbox - On this day... --Jmh6d (talk) 15:55, 17 April 2021 (EDT)
