The Covenant School

The Covenant School (Covenant) is a private non-denominational Christian school serving grades from pre-kindergarten to grade 12[1]. The school strives for academic excellence under the sovereignty of God[2]. It was established in 1985. [3]

On July 6, 1993, City Council granted a special use permit amendment to increase enrollment up to 450 students.[4]

Covenant is a member of the Institute for Independent Education[5]. There was a record enrollment of 702 students in 2007, but that number has dropped to 512 for the school year of 2011. [6] Today, two campuses serve almost 700 students from Pre-K through Grade 12, and over 1,000 alumni are engaging the world as leaders in their professions, their churches, and their communities.[3]

George Sanker was named as the new head of school in late February 2011. [6]

Brad Baggett was named as the head of school in 2023.Bill Zimmerman was named as Interim Director of Lower School[7], Spencer Burton has served as the Middle School Director since 2023[8], and Nikki Shrader has served as the Upper School Director since 2023[9].

Lower school

Lower school building, the former McIntire High School

The school has a lower campus for grades Pre-K-6th located in Charlottesville. The lower school has an annual talent show for the 5th and 6th grades. The lower school is in the building previously known as McIntire High School.

Mo Gaffney will become the head of the Lower School on July 1, 2011.[1]

Upper school

The upper campus for grades 7th-12th is located in Albemarle County. The upper campus has varsity and junior varsity football, soccer, swimming, cross country, lacrosse, volleyball, golf, and field hockey teams.
