StreamWatch merged with the Rivanna Conservation Society on January 1, 2016 to become the Rivanna Conservation Alliance. [citation needed]

Background

StreamWatch was an Albemarle County-based organization that conducts community based stream monitoring within the Rivanna watershed. David Hannah is the current executive director. [1][2] [3]

The organization was originally part of the Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District, but became an independent non-profit in 2010. [4] The organization receives funding from several sources, including the Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority, the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. [3] The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has granted StreamWatch "Level 3" status, which means its reports are accepted and used in state water quality assessments.

2011 land use report

A land use study conducted by StreamWatch that was released in October 2011 reported that 70 percent of streams in the Rivanna River Basin are impaired according to water quality standards set by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. [2] The study cost $330,000 and was conducted with the help of over 120 volunteers. [5]

Fluvanna defunding

Fluvanna County experienced significant budget shortfalls for the 2013 fiscal year, resulting in complete cuts to funding for StreamWatch [6]
