Southern Environmental Law Center
The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is a non-profit legal group specializing in environmental protection.
Founded in 1987 by attorney Rick Middleton and headquartered in Charlottesville, SELC engages in legislative lobbying in Washington, DC and in statehouses, working with various regulatory agencies, and brings litigation related to environmental issues.. In addition to Charlottesville, SELC has regional offices in Chapel Hill and Atlanta as well as satellite offices in Washington, DC, Richmond, Asheville, NC and Charleston, SC. Currently 38 attorneys work for the Center.
On the local level, SELC has opposed the Western Bypass, worked to combat construction runoff, and promotes "more sustainable land use and transportation patterns" within Charlottesville and Albemarle County. In July 2012, the SELC, in collaboration with the Piedmont Environmental Council, released a plan presenting alternatives to the 6.2 mile bypass that included Berkmar Drive Extended and the so-called Best Buy Ramp.
