Raymon Thacker is mayor emeritus of Scottsville, having served as mayor from 1966 to 1996.

Biography

Thacker was moved to Scottsville at the age of two, and is a lifelong resident. He operated Thacker Bros. Funeral Home until his retirement in 1998.

Government service

Thacker was initially elected to the Scottsville Town Council in 1941, and during his first term he was instrumental in bringing the Uniroyal Tire plant, a major employer, to the town. In 1963, Thacker was re-elected to the council, and became mayor in 1966. He served as mayor until 1996, and at his retirement was the longest-serving mayor in the commonwealth.

Accomplishments included the dedication, on July 4, 1968, of the bridge spanning the James River that connects the town with Buckingham County; and advocacy for protection of the town from James River flooding, leading to construction of the A. Raymon Thacker Levee.

Awards

Thacker was commended by the General Assembly at his retirement for the completion of an exemplary career of service to the citizens of Scottsville.
