Charlottesville-Albemarle and UVa are repeatedly listed among "best places", and win other awards for superlative achievement among localities.



  • Go Green Travel Green names area as a "top spot for agritourism." [1]


  • Bert Sperling and Yahoo Real Estate once again ranks Charlottesville as top place to live in the county. [2]
  • 14th best small metropolitan area in job creation and economic growth: The Milken Institute, an economic think-tank, named the Charlottesville metropolitan area as #14 on its 2011 list of best-performing metros in job creation and economic growth, up from #20 in 2010.[3]


  • USA Today ranks Charlottesville as #6 college town[4].
  • Charlottesville listed as America's 9th "Brainiest City" by Richard Florida of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto[5].


  • The Charlottesville metro area is named in the top 50 places in the country to launch a small business by Money Magazine.[6]
  • The Arbor Day Foundation awards Charlottesville with both a Tree City USA and a "Growth Award"[7].


  • Authors Bert Sperling and Peter Sander selected Charlottesville as the best place to live in the United States in "Cities Ranked and Rated" for the year 2004.[8][9]



  • Yahoo Travel, #2 on "America's best college towns" list [10]


  • TheStreet names Charlottesville as one of its top ten cities that "embody the American Dream." [11]
  • A Silver Level Walk Friendly Community for "high rates of walking, innovative planning practices, and a centralized, successful Downtown Pedestrian Mall"[12]


  • Men's Journal: Top-five healthiest cities[13][14].
  • The Associated Press calls Charlottesville one of the top 12 football towns in the country[15]


  • The Center for Digital Government named Charlottesville named fourth best "digital city" among cities between 30,000 and 74,999 residents, for government use of technology to serve residents and streamline government operations[16].
