International Rescue Committee

The International Rescue Committee is a New York-based non-profit that helps refugees settle in new countries. The organization has an office in downtown Charlottesville[1].

With a goal stated in 2006 of bringing 150 refugees to the area per year, IRC has relocated people from countries including Bosnia, Afghanistan, Somalia[2], Serbia, Croatia, Myanmar, China, Togo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo[3].

Mosque

IRC has brought several members of the Muslim faith to Charlottesville, which has put pressure on space at local Muslim facilities[4].

Restaurants

IRC refugees have founded local restaurants, including Marco and Luca Dumpling Store[3] and the Balkan Bakery[5].

Immigration statistics

  • 130 Somali Bantus came to Charlottesville in 2004[2]
