The non-profit Green Infrastructure Center was founded in 2006 to assist and encourage localities, regional planners, and private sector groups to consider natural systems and ecological processes as new communities are built and old ones are redeveloped. Their website defines green infrastructure as "the interconnected network of waterways, wetlands, woodlands, wildlife habitats, and other natural areas."[1] The Center is located in Charlottesville.

The director is Karen Firehock.
