About

Born in Williamsburg in 1743, George Gilmer studied medicine at the College of William & Mary. He married his first cousin, Lucy Walker, and moved to Charlottesville shortly before the American Revolution. In addition to being a personal friend, Gilmer was also the attending physician to Thomas Jefferson and his family. He also appeared as a delegate in Jefferson's stead at the Fifth Virginia Convention in Williamsburg in 1776.[2]

Descendants

Gilmer's son Francis W. Gilmer was tasked by Jefferson with staffing the University of Virginia and was offered the position of chair of the law department, but died before he could assume it.[3]

His grandson Thomas Walker Gilmer was a governor of Virginia and secretary of the navy who died in an explosion on the U.S.S. Princeton in 1844.[4]
